Statement
This totem pole symbolizes the Taino Indians of Puerto Rico. At the base is “la Piedra Escrita,” a rock carved with petroglyphs illustrating gods, animals, and people. Above that is “el Guanín,” a medallion given to the town's powerful chief. Then follows “el Cemí,” a token utilized for rituals to honor the gods. The tree trunk represents the respect and value of the earth. Finally, the top holds the unmistakable “sol Taíno,” representing the sun.
