Cantun
Acrylic on foam
14" H x 8" W
2022
Statement
This piece represents my mothers' maiden name, Cantun, which means "snakestone" in the Maya language. The hieroglyph Can (snake) becomes a full snake and wraps around the Tun (stone) hieroglyph. The foam texture with the beige paint gives the illusion that it is a limestone statue, which is a common material used by the Mayans. This piece connects with the Hispanic/Latino culture for it is a representation of ancient Mayan art.
Biography
I am an Art Education major with an Art History minor. My dream is to continue researching and spread the history of Mayan art for I come from a Mayan background.
